Pensole Lewis College x New Balance Masterclass 2023: Performance Reimagined (Color and Materials)

Excerpts from final project which included brand, consumer, material, color, and trend research. Original color and material palettes, consumer boards, color stories, and colorblocking. Final project featured teammate's original footwear and apparel designs in Core, Seasonal, and Energy palettes with material maps.

Material palette focused on more sustainable options already or soon to be at scale for large scale production. Smart technology also implemented in teammates original footwear designs to provide feedback and support.

Color palettes designed with both brand and consumer in mind, all telling different stories of consumer's relationship with fitness and brand. Colorblockings of New Balance 5740 demonstrate palette's translation to existing New Balance product.

Through more sustainable materials, measured use of technology, focus on emerging consumer trends and markets, and brand research we reimagine performance through the lens of New Balance.

Consumer Board. Destiny Jenkins, 23 y/o old from Atlanta.

Grounded, sentimental, active, intentional. Howard alumni, family-orriented-oriented, working in television. Solo and group home workouts as preventative health and general wellness. Began working out after older sister Jasmine (top left) had cortisol related complications during pregnancy.

SS24 Palette. Developed from greater Core and Seasonal palettes. Familiar brand colors with injections of color.

Material Palette. Designed with project prompt in mind (Performance Reimagined), a mix of materials in New Balance's existing roster as well as introduction of more sustainable options.

S Cafe is a breathable odor resistant performance yarn produced using coffee waste. Clarion Soranina is a synthetic material made from 95-1000% post-consumer material that mimics leather. Ariaprene AP Terra is a foam-core fabric composed of 25-100% post-consumer product that can be used similar to neoprene and neoprene packages. Bloom is an innovative algae-blended resin that can be utilized similarly to EVA and TPE. rPET yarns utilize factory and post-consumer waste to reduce use of virgin textiles.

TPU yarn is utilized in targeted areas to help provide structure in footwear and apparel. Celliant Viscose is a mineral infused textile that promotes circulation and recovery and is composed of cotton, lyocell, and other natural fibers. Liquid Wire is flexible and durable circuitry utilized to collect and communicate performance data to user that is both easily installed and removed. San Fang film logos and Vibram rubber serve munch of the same purposes as in New Balance's existing product.

"Intention", Core Palette. Neutral and warm. Designed to complement the space of Destiny's home workouts and transition easily between workouts and daily wear.

"Heritage", Seasonal palette. Designed to tell the story of Destiny's resourceful introduction into fitness and New Balance while a student at Howard University.
